Memory Replay in Sleep: How the Brain Edits the Day

Sleep is not an archive for daytime experience. It is closer to an editing room: events are accelerated, split apart, reordered, and juxtaposed with older knowledge.

Three rhythms, one handoff

During deep sleep, slow waves organize large-scale cortical excitability, thalamic spindles open windows for plasticity, and hippocampal ripples carry compressed sequences. When these events align, short-term traces have a better chance of entering stable cortical networks.

To remember is not to preserve, but to decide anew—during each replay—what is worth keeping.

From episodes to rules

Replay does more than stabilize individual episodes. As similar experiences reactivate together, the brain can extract their shared structure—turning “where I encountered it” into “how this kind of thing usually works.”

  • Replay can be much faster than real experience.
  • Emotion and reward alter which fragments are prioritized.
  • Forgetting may be part of editing rather than a failure.
